Arts and Animals from Elsewhere

There’s something appealing to me about art and animals from other places. Exotic animal jewelry, for instance, combines well with flowing African dresses and colorful South American outfits. I never pretend to be a fashion expert, but I do love beautiful clothes, and love making things in wild patterns and colors. That’s part of the fun. I once had a friend who painted matching t-shirts for the colorful clay earrings I had.

I like starting out with something beautiful- either something I’ve created myself or something another artist has made, such as a rat pendant or some other small pet jewelry.

Now I get my inspiration and create around that piece. It might be a sweatshirt I’ve designed with some puffy paint or embroidery, or maybe I’ll dress up the necklace with some beads of my own.

It might not even have anything to do with something worn. Maybe I’ll be inspired to write a poem, or paint a picture. Or just photograph it and send it to a friend of mine that loves this sort of thing. Or, (and this is also a valid thing to do) I might just sit with it for a while and take it in, like a long one way admiration party. This isn’t as silly as it might sound at first. Think about art museums- that’s one place where you can go and take in art for as long as you want. So what’s the difference in absorbing some aesthetics from a piece of animal jewelry? Plus you can do that in the comfort of your own home.

It might sound like I have all the time in the world to do this sort of thing, and you are a very busy person. Well, that may be true (the fact that you’re busy, that is) but you might be surprised to know that no matter how busy I am, I always take some time to smell the roses, admire a beautiful butterfly, or walk outside in the puddles after a rain storm. This is a beautiful planet and I plan on enjoying it and all the wondrous things that artists create while I’m here.

So the next time you see a piece of art, a detailed pair of guinea pig earrings, or a lovely creation by your young child or grandchild, remember to take a moment to absorb the beauty. You’ll be doing yourself a big favor.
