What Happened to Music in the Schools?

When I was a child, every school day had a period when we kids raised our voices in song. Remember “Drill Ye Tarriers Drill”? I honestly think that music class and art class kept me sane. Growing up creative in the suburban 1950s could be rather tedious at times.

I worry about children today. Diagnosed with ADD or ADHD in grade school, taught progressive politics from kindergarten on, given sex education that might potentially steer them into relationships they neither need nor can handle; all these factors are, in my opinion, leading our country into dangerous waters. And when you up the ante by ignoring the artistic side of life, your children may be teetering on a precipice. Maybe I’m being overly dramatic. On the other hand, maybe I’m not.

Making Stuff Up

When was the last time you and your kids made up a story or song? This is a fun thing to do together as a family. Not only does it encourage creativity in your child, but in yourself as well.

Many people making a full time living as an artist started out as kids who were encouraged to do something creative with their lives. Summer doesn’t have to be a time of endless boredom, broken only by the playing of video games.

With just a little innovation you can turn every day into one of productive fun and new skills learned. By the end of the summer, instead of a bunch of slacker kids ready to return to school just to break the monotony, you might have a budding artist on your hand.
